Kemba Earle's profile

Camden Black History Season

Love Camden organised their fourth Black History Season, which was a three-month-long celebration of the remarkable accomplishments and valuable contributions of Black individuals across Camden and the UK. I was part of the team responsible for designing a look and feel to be applied to print and digital assets for the event. The identity had to be appealing, vibrant, and representative of the themes “Celebrating our sisters” and
“Black Resistance”.
For the wordmark, I used Vocal Type’s MARTIN font, a font deeply rooted in black resistance. MARTIN was inspired by the posters carried by protestors in the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968, where 1,300 Black sanitation workers in Memphis protested to demand better working conditions and higher pay.

The pattern is inspired by Ghanaian Kente cloth, introducing an Afrocentric element to the design, and uses a bright colour palette to tie into the celebratory theme. The pattern was modified to work seamlessly across all the various print and digital assets.
